Tesla and many other luxury car makers have continued to get flack for their use and implementation of the steering yoke replacing steering wheels within their cars. While I can see the laughable situation, I also think that this small change to commonly used vehicles could actually be a worthwhile improvement! Here’s why!

Visibility

Let’s face it, you’re not that tall. That’s not a dig on you, I’m not tall either. While we can certainly see over the steering wheel for the most part, what about the people that can’t? This lack of visibility may seem small but when we’re talking about reaction times in a vehicle moving 60MPH or 100KMH, that extra visibility that is available from just using a steering yoke could quite literally be life or death. I’m not trying to use some sort of fear tactic to get you all to go buy a vehicle that uses a yoke instead of a wheel, but it could be important to some people. Moral of the story is, if safety is really at the forefront of your mind, a yoke is a potential improvement.

Material Usage

Steering wheels and steering yokes are fairly robust devices. They not only have to receive and give inputs and outputs to and from the driver, but…
