Why Steam On ChromeOS Is So Important

Back in March of this year Google announced that Steam would be entering an alpha test on ChromeOS. While this alpha is still incredibly limited considering that it requires an unstable version of ChromeOS to be in use but it also requires certain hardware, I think that Steam on ChromeOS may be the tipping point for ChromeOS to enter the mainstream market. Gone will the days of Chromebooks being stuck in the world of only education or only to edit Google docs. Now you can soon game on ChromeOS! That being said let's dive a little deeper and exore just why Steam coming to ChromeOS is so important!

The Storefront

While Windows has relied on the open internet to develop a fully fleshed out platform Google has always opted towards something a bit more centralized, which to be fair, has afforded them a lot more growth due to the ease of access that a dedicated app store offers versus downloading suspicision .exe files over the internet. That being said, ChromeOS features a lot of really cool software, whether you’re using the Chrome Web Store, various Linux stores or the Google Play store, the options are there. But as for gaming, there does seem to be a bit of a gap here. Again, it’s far from being the absolute worst gaming platform but it just can’t compete with Windows, until today.
