Why I Love Minimalism
I’ve written many times about minimalism inside of Medium. Often times I refer to the monetary gains that minimalism offers to prospective “practioners” or perhaps the sense of freedom that comes with owning ever fewer things but I never really opened up the broader discussion on the topic. So let me tell you, in a broad sense of course, why I love minimalism so much!
Freedom
I used to hoard everything that ever entered my possession, whether we’re talking about computer parts or literally mountains of homework from years past (And as a current doctoral student that had the potential to be a lot of homework!) I kept way too much. During this time I thought there was the human prerogative to collect as many things as you could in life, as if the more things you had in life the happier you would become. I remember always thinking about what I would buy with a bunch of money, instead of experiences or just “time” in general I was too busy thinking about the potential of a big screen TV or a supped up gaming laptop. I never thought about how constricting these items were. Not only did they take up physical space but they also took up mental and emotional space as well. Eventually I slowly started to shed myself of various items that simply didn’t mean anything to me anymore (yes, that includes the mountains of homework that I had kept since kindergarten) and I progressively found…
