Why Formula 1 Should Move Towards An AWD Powertrain
This is probably not a popular opinion with everyone but especially the Formula 1 teams, and we’ll get to that topic here in a little bit. Long story short, I think Formula 1 should move from a RWD based motorsport towards AWD. Here’s why.
The Hybrid System
The biggest reason the Formula 1 teams push back against the deployment of an AWD regulation is the fact that it will create extra cost. Which if you’ve been following Formula 1 you would know that they already have an ongoing rising cost issue as of late. That being said, this is a valid point, however due to the current power unit that the cars use utilizing a hybrid electric system there could be a point to be made that Formula 1 is capable of controlling cost by forcing the FWD system to strictly utilize the electric power system instead of the actual internal combustion engine. This could not only make the hybrid system more useful in low-speed cornering but it could also make interesting effect with regards to the balance of these Formula 1 cars as well.
