Why Career Goals Shouldn’t Be The Big Picture
I remember watching movies like Wolf of Wall Street, Wall Street, The Aviator and The Social Network. They glorified a certain type of work, one that is all encompassing. As if these characters and even the worlds they lived in were defined by the amount of time and energy they put forth into their work. To be blunt, I strongly disagree with that type of life. Now, I want to preface this by saying I’m not saying you shouldn’t work hard or solve problems with an entrepreneurial spirit, because you absolutely should! That being said, you shouldn’t let work take over every aspect of your life, here’s why.

It’s not a new discovery that humans are a social creature. From the dawn of man we’ve gravitated towards each other for both functional reasons such as protection and procreation, but also for things like developing art and culture. No one has heard about the one man civilization, not because those weren’t interesting, but because they didn’t last long enough for us to even remember them. When you want to make the argument that emotions are just chemicals inside our brain or something more like a “soul”. The fact is, all these social interactions make us happier as humans, we laugh with each other, we talk with each other, we protect each other. Part of these relationships are very primitive but at the same time…
