Why Are Operating Systems Boring Now?

I used to try out all sorts of operating systems back during high school, whether we’re talking about Linux, Windows, OSX or Android, I loved trying out all the different UI’s and really trying to understand the benefits of all these different operating systems. Back then it was a lot easier to see the pros and cons list when you compared each operating system side by side, however now a days things have gotten awfully grey as of late. Let’s talk about why that is.

The App

It seems that every major player when it comes to operating systems has the fundamental apps in place to keep people happy. Whether we’re talking about social media or productivity, each operating system has all the same capabilities now. Going between using Facebook on iOS versus Android isn’t some sort of mind boggling difference, instead it’s basically the same exact experience, perhaps the back button is a little different but you’re not really outclassing either app on either platform. Boring may not be ideal but it’s made the world of smartphones and therefore switching between smartphones incredibly easy. The same exact thing happens with desktop operating systems, most consumers really only need a browser to accomplish the things that they want to accomplish and the experience of downloading a browser to your Linux, Mac, or Windows PC are all incredibly similar.
