The Problem With The WRC In 2022

No seriously, I like cars and I got into Formula 1 over the last couple of years but I’m very far from being a WRC expert. That being said, I think rally as a motorsport is super awesome and I’d love for it to grow especially within the context of the United States (Partially because NASCAR isn’t that exciting but also partially because I really want Ford to make a Puma RS in the United States, but I digress) so here are a few very opinionated thoughts that I have on the WRC in 2022 that I think could use some solutions.

The Co-Driver Dilemma

I think the co-driver is certainly an interesting aspect in terms of motorsport, they assist the driver in terms of approach angle and speed, basically the co-driver is Google Maps on steroids. I don’t think there is necessarily a problem with the co-driver’s task, I instead think the biggest problem stems from a viewer perspective. By viewer perspective I mean the fact that I can’t just remember a single driver’s name in order to cheer them on I also now have to know who the co-driver is as well. I know this sounds pretty dumb but one of the primary reasons I enjoy watching Formula 1 is because of its simplicity, not only are there only ten teams but there are also 20 drivers, flip that on its head and look at it from a WRC point of view and things get…
