The Problem With Open World Video Games In 2022

Halo, Killzone, Uncharted, God of War, Star Wars, Metal Gear Solid, and even Gears of War have all been shifting their incredibly linear video game design towards an open world concept over the last couple of years. While this may seem cool to a certain extend, I want to talk about why this may actually prove to be a problem as the years go by.

Cost

It is really no secret that crafting a large open world game takes more time and energy than far more linear experiences do. Meaning that not only are all the flashy new graphics mixed with higher production value causing a ballooning affect to the video game budget’s but now so is the size and scope of these video games, all thanks to developers really pushing for open world concepts. While the hardware is hardly an issue anymore in terms of being able to pack in a beautiful open world experience, it does still bring to light the various issues of developing all this extra content, which brings up to the second part of the article, the content no one ever places.

Missed Opportunities

Easter eggs aside, most developers put a lot of effort into various aspects of their video games, all in the hope that people will find and enjoy each little piece of it. Whether we’re talking about the little sound that occurs when Kratos…
