The Electric Alternative: Biofuels
The Problem
One of the most mainstream methods of reducing carbon emissions from an individual perspective is to move towards an electric car, not only is it likely that your energy will be cleaner coming from your local grid but the efficiency of these electric systems out perform Internal Combustion Engines more often than not, leading towards a reduction in individual operating cost. Coupled with a reduction in prices over the years, the future looks bright for electric cars. That being said, electric vehicles are only penetrating a very small portion of the market and they leave the largest group of individuals blocked due to economic and infrastructure based reasons, leaving many to continue their normal use of the often “dirtier” gas powered alternatives.
The Numbers
According to Jato, 90% of the worlds vehicles were based on the internal combustion engine, leaving only 10% using some level of electric power. This statistic focuses only on transportation based vehicles, it’s easy to forget all of the industrial and agricultural based equipment that is still using petroleum based energy as well. This all brings to light the need for a possible alternative to electric drive trains and petroleum based fuels. That alternative could be found in Biofuels.
