The Battle of The Acquisitions
Yes, I enjoy the irony of using a photo of a SNES controller instead of acknowledging Sony or Microsoft in the photo, but I digress. I have to admit, I have no idea how I want to organize my train of thoughts on this one so bear with me. Sony and Microsoft have been on a rampage in terms of acquiring both video game studios and entire video game publishes, so I think it’s important that we talk about the implications of this both in the present and in a more future oriented perspective, so let’s see why exactly these companies are trying to buy every game developer under the sun.
Content Wars
That’s right, long dead are the console wars, instead we’re going to be shifting towards content wars. The fact is, video game consoles are going to be dying sooner or later, as much as I hate to admit it, it seems inevitable at this point. With smartphone technology getting better on a six month cadence our current generation consoles are likely going to be outclassed within a few years, and by devices that can fit in our pockets. If that doesn’t make you rethink life I don’t know what will. Now the reason this is so important to the average consumer is because instead of buying hardware we’re going to be shifting towards buying either services to play software or we’re going to be buying software that can work…
