I can tell you from my personal experience that in my aging 2016 Ford Focus RS, the steering wheel is already being trimmed down with a flat bottom or what many people refer to as the "flat tire steering wheel" so it's clear there is a market demand for slimmer, sleeker and less round steering devices, it's not that farfetched.
