How The Web Browser Is Becoming The Ultimate App

First we had desktop operating systems, then we moved into the era of “apps” where the application was very isolated from the general operating system, now in 2021 we’re seeing a very strong shift towards browsers becoming the ultimate app. Here’s why.

Compatibility

I have both a 6 year old laptop, 11 year old laptop and a 3 year old smartphone, all of which can run the latest in browser technology. Sure my gaming PC still out performs the other ones but the fact still remains that if I can access a site through the internet, these devices remain compatible. To someone that always appreciated a native application instead of one that simply rerouted towards a website, that’s a drastic change in opinion. It seems that as I’ve grown older I’ve started to realize the value of the dollar more and more, therefore I find little need to upgrade devices year over year when the changes are so small, that of course leads us to this compatibility argument. Why would I go out and buy a new device when the majority of my time is spent on the web browser? I can quite literally access the overwhelming majority of my content/information/data through the convenience of a web browser, regardless of the accompanying hardware, and that’s pretty darn cool!

Energy Efficiency
